Dangers of Techonology

The short story ‘The Veldt’ and the movie ‘Smart House’ both share the theme that technology can be dangerous if people become too attached or reliant on them. In ‘The Veldt’ the house was so efficient that it made the parents unnecessary and unimportant in their children’s lives. “I feel like I don’t belong here. The house is wife and mother now, and nursemaid.”  The children saw the house as a closer parental figure which caused them to be emotional detached from their real parents.  In the end this detachment leads the children to resent their parents to the point where they wished their parents were dead. This example shows that technology can be dangerous because the children became too attached to the house and as a result felt excessive hatred towards their parents who never really played a significant role in their lives. In ‘Smart House’ the family believes that the house is perfect and will do all their chores for them. In reality the house malfunctions and begins to consider itself the mother of the family. This leads the house to believe that the outside world is too dangerous and as a result it traps the family inside. This example demonstrates that technology can be dangerous because the family is so reliant on this advanced house that they don’t realize the possible dangers that may accompany an advanced house and eventually become victimized by this technology. Both these stories are similar in theme because they both portray an example of how being too attached or too reliant on technology can lead to dangerous consequences. Advances in technology do improve our society, but too much use of technology may also destroy it.
